Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.
Prov 4:7
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5
WISDOM, how would you define it and how is it acquired? A statement I frequently repeated to the students of CCA (Covenant Christian Academy) is that wisdom is the right use of knowledge. We all know smart and intelligent people who use their knowledge in a self-centered, sin stained and corrupt manner, as opposed to those who bring blessings to others with their understanding and discernment. Basically, wisdom is truth rightly understood, rightly valued, and rightly applied. It is acquired in the lifelong process of learning to think God’s thoughts after Him, ordering our lives in an on-going manner of faith obedience to what He has revealed in His Word. Biblical wisdom is demonstrated when truth governs our faith and practice.
“… and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2Tim 4:15-16
I’VE been enjoying of late two devotional offerings (Anchored In Peace and Be Still and Follow) from Mindful Christianity, and it occurred to me that what I’m observing in these daily musings are practical – everyday – applications of established Biblical Truth/Theology.
AGAIN, James 1:5 states: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But notice James’ preface to that statement: My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing (vv’s 2-4). Indeed, the acquisition of wisdom is a journey in Christ-centered life lessons observed, learned and applied by faith along the way. Here’s something I gleaned recently from Mindful Christianity:
Wisdom is often found in the small choices we make every day. The thoughts we entertain when no one is watching. The words we speak when emotions run high. The way we treat people when life is going well… and when it isn’t. A Christ-centered life isn’t built in a single moment. It’s built one decision at a time, as we invite God to shape our hearts, guide our words, and lead our steps.
I’M going to stop here today. However, below is a brief intro and link to something I posted on my blog several years ago. It is rather long, but you may find it helpful to your journey as it was for mine. May we, by God’s mercy, grow in wisdom, humility, patience, and grace as we walk together in the journey His had purposed for each and everyone of us, individually and collectively.
In the inexorable riches of Christ,
Joe

These Three
This is an excerpt of a letter I wrote to my grandchildren back in 2021. It is edited and revised to speak to the broader audience at Captive Thoughts under the Musings menu heading The Way. I’ve titled it “These Three” – three scriptures that give shape to my world view frame of reference, and how they entered into my thoughts and continue to affect my life’s perspective. …continued at https://captivethoughts.net/these-three/
