Lessons Learned – Preface

Lessons Learned
(subtitle: When I Worked for Edison)

Preface

My Captive Thoughts website started out as a weekly blog titled Lessons from the Garden, a serial spiritual growth blog drawing on the analogy that “gardens just don’t happen.” Our Christian walk, our growth in Christ, is like a well-tended, deliberately planted, cultivated, and nurtured garden.  This is a metaphor that runs throughout Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, a teaching point our Lord often used in the gospels.  Over time, Captive Thoughts has expanded with other topics and themes, Lessons Learned being one of them.

Lessons Learned is about my reminiscing and musings from the past, When I Worked for Edison (WIWFE).

February 27, 1967 was my entry date working for Southern California Edison Company.  I enjoyed nearly 30 years with SCE, falling short by six months of my thirtieth anniversary.  From there I found my way into the medical device industry, working for three separate companies the next 14 years.  It was with Nobel Biocare on my last day before taking a new position with Ossur, that I discovered how engrained Edison was in my proverbial DNA.   My group at NBC (the planning department) gave me a little going away party that included a cake with the words emboldened upon it: “When I worked for Edison ______________”.  I laughed out loud!

Yep, it is rare that those words don’t crop up in my conversations in one way or another.  It is not so much that I identify with being employed with SCE for all that time, as it is that I learned so many valuable lessons that shaped who I am; lessons learned through the experiences, training, and people I encountered.  It was a unique, rich, character shaping experience from start to finish.  Indeed, the lessons learned were incredibly valuable; a wisdom gained that I deeply treasure.

I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.  (Ecc. 3:12-13)

Lessons Learned is an attempt to pass on to others the gift of God I truly enjoyed, When I Worked for Edison.
